UNIVERSITIES & TODAY’S LOCAL AND GLOBAL HUMAN RIGHTS STRUGGLES

Cities like Hamilton and Pittsburgh have responded to deindustrialization by working to grow their economies around the “eds, meds, and tech” industries. This kind of development has been accompanied by rising inequality, gentrification, and displacement of low-income residents, fueling trans-local movements for the “right to the city.”

This presentation will examine the role universities have played in both of these dynamics, offering reflections that emerge from participatory research with Pittsburgh’s Human Rights City Alliance and related human rights movement networks.
