A lively discussion explored the global upsurge in populism, nationalism, and protest in a November 11 event at McMaster University sponsored by the Institute on Globalization and the Human Condition (IGHC). This upsurge has challenged governments around the world, as well as the broader US-led liberal order that has been globally dominant since World War II. The discussion began with commentary on the causes and significance of these changes for Canada and beyond, from Dr. Tina Fetner (Department of Sociology), Dr. Neil McLaughlin (Department of Sociology), Dr. Tony Porter (Department of Political Science), Dr. James Ingram (Department of Political Science), and Dr. Petra Rethmann (Department of Anthropology). Other participants at the event raised a series of fascinating issues such as the roles of emotion, social media, research strategies, and the distinctive Canadian context and experience. Dr. Petra Rethmann, Director of IGHC, concluded by noting that IGHC would work to encourage further discussion and collaborative research on these issues.
